Introduction

Oral Medicine is the management of diseases of the soft tissues in the oral cavity. These problems can include diseases such as:

  • Recurrent ulcers
  • Suspicious lesions
  • Oral manifestations of systemic diseases
  • Oral pain
  • Burning mouth problems
  • Changes in the appearance of the soft tissues

My Dentist or Doctor has referred me for biopsy; does this mean I have cancer?

It is important to note that only a very small proportion of people who undergo investigation and biopsies of suspicious lesions actually have cancer.

What does a biopsy involve?

A biopsy is a procedure where a representative piece of tissue is removed for examination under a microscope. This allows Dr Hyam to plan your treatment or surgery with a diagnosis in place. Most soft tissue biopsies can be performed under local anaesthetic but some may require a general anaesthetic.
