Introduction

Head and neck surgery is the management of malignancies and other pathology of the head and neck region.

My Dentist or Doctor has referred me for biopsy; does this mean I have cancer?

It is important to note that only a very small proportion of people who undergo investigation and biopsies of suspicious lesions actually have cancer.

What does a biopsy involve?

A biopsy is a procedure where a representative piece of tissue is removed for examination under a microscope. This allows Dr Hyam to plan your treatment or surgery with a diagnosis in place. Most soft tissue biopsies can be performed under local anaesthetic but some may require a general anaesthetic.

What are the risks factors for Oral Cancer?

There are several known risk factors for oral cancer. These include:

  • Smoking
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Leukoplakia
  • Betel Nut Chewing (Quid)
  • Other rarer conditions.

What are the risks of surgery?

When you consult with Dr Hyam he will discuss the relative risks and benefits of any proposed procedures. Every procedure has risks and these risks are always balanced against your individual needs and treatment requirements.

What do I do now?

If you think you may have a suspicious lesion, you should contact the rooms immediately. Please let our staff know that you require an urgent appointment and they will ensure you receive timely and appropriate care.
